skillet on the wall

May 25

Yesterday, while watching a baseball game on television with my boyfriend (which really equated to daydreaming and reading a book between looking up to catch a glimpse of Skip Schumaker’s ass) there was a loud thunk on our dining room window. I couldn’t figure out what had happened, until my boyfriend pointed out a hardly-noticeable mark and a small, white feather stuck to it. I’m not sure what drove me to do so, I guess it was morbid empathy brought about by the consumption of three beers, but I ran outside and found the tiny bird caught in the midst of death throes. He was on his back with a leg twitching in the air. I wanted to pick the little fellow up, but in the time it took my fuzzy mind to fight the impulse— due to the underlying logic of potential diseases carried— he stopped moving altogether and was dead. Not knowing what to do, I went back inside and finished watching the game. I checked this morning, and the bird is gone. My guess is the neighbor’s cat found him.

“He’d invented his own language in which words were just a tune, speech a kind of singing— a syrup language that sweetened the world but which was powerless to keep it at bay. The harder the world appeared, the softer his language became, until his words were like beautifully cadenced nonsense, a gorgeous song that only Lady had the ears to hear.”
-Geoff Dyer, But Beautiful on the relationship between Lady Day & Prez

Reading about jazz: admittedly dorky, surprisingly beautiful.

Please, don’t call it “chambray.” You are pretty much wearing a jean shirt; denim, if you are feeling fancy.

“Good photographs are there to be listened to as well as looked at; the better the photograph, the more there is to hear. Had we the means to decipher them, could we not go further still and use photographs like this to hear what was actually being said? Or even, since the best photos seem to extend beyond the moment they depict, what has just been said, what is about to be said…”
